Providing comprehensive primary and preventive care in Pocatello and four rural communities in southeast Idaho for 28 years, Health West has worked to increase access to care and reduce health disparities and barriers to care, while assuring quality of care to people and communities that would otherwise not have medical care available to them. Health West receives funding from the Bureau of Primary Health Care as a community and migrant health center.
About Us
Health West is a non–profit Community Health Center that was established in 1976. Health West operates clinics in Aberdeen, American Falls, Lava Hot Springs, Downey, and Pocatello. It is the only medical clinic in Aberdeen, Lava Hot Springs, and Downey.
Health West has a large number of bilingual and bicultural staff to better serve the Hispanic community. It partners with the Hispanic Health Project at Idaho State University to use promotoras to deliver health education and outreach to Hispanic residents in the service area.
A strong collaboration exists with Portneuf Medical Center and the Family Medicine Residency to support clinical education and service delivery. Collaborative relationships with other community organizations enable Health West to meet the mental health, substance abuse, vocational, social, and housing needs of patients. Health West participates in the 340-B prescription discount program and assists patients with access to pharmaceutical companies’ prescription assistance programs.
The mission of Health West is to provide high quality health care to all, regardless of ability to pay.
Services
Health West provides a range pf primary and preventive care services in English and Spanish at its five clinics. Primary and preventive services for all age groups include:
- Immunizations
- Cholesterol, blood pressure, and diabetes screening
- Chronic disease management for diabetes, high blood pressure, Etc.
- Acute care with same day appointments for upper respiratory infections
- Basic emergency services such as suturing and basic fracture care
- Prenatal services in Aberdeen, American Falls, Lava, and Downey at Health West and in Pocatello through the Pocatello Family Medicine Clinic
- HIV/STD screening
- Family planning services
- Physicals for immigration, Head Start, sports, DOT
- Diagnostic laboratory, Outreach, and Case Management
Health West has arrangements with community providers for referrals for mental health, substance abuse, dental, and specialty care. Patients in need of hospitalization are admitted to Portneuf Medical Center.
